Get Dressed Every Day Challenge

I am, mostly, a stay at home mom and my favorite thing to wear when I know I will not be leaving the house is gym clothes. They’re comfy. And cute. Plus they always seem to fit! So why bother getting dressed? I don’t know about you, but when I wear comfy clothes, I am more likely to be lounging around and less likely to want to stay on my feet and get stuff done. I find myself not being very disciplined. I cook, I clean, hang out with my kids, but I also do plenty(I really should say “too much”) of scrolling through social media, watching YouTube videos, browsing the internet, etc. I’m not saying that any of that is bad, but I felt like I could definitely be doing a lot less of the empty stuff and more of something beneficial.

I’ve heard many times that  when you “get ready” for the day, you are more likely to feel like you’re not just chillin, but you’re also working which would, in turn, make you be more productive.

So I decided to challenge myself and make myself get dressed and do my hair and make up every day for 5 days and see what happens.

The Outfits

First day, I wore jeans and a casual blouse. I even put on earrings and a necklace. I felt good. My kids reaction, though, was, “Why are you dressed so nice?” “Are you  going somewhere?” They’re, obviously, not used to seeing me all dressed and no where to go.

So, was I more productive? I did spend time on the couch just scrolling(boo, to bad habits) but I made myself get back to work much quicker than before. I, then, spent 2+ hours getting some blog work done on the computer.

Day 2: This day didn’t start as well as I’d hoped. I woke up at 9! So I missed my window to workout and get ready for the day before starting school, but I planned on still working out after, so I put on gym clothes, had breakfast, and home schooled. I did my workout, had lunch and was getting into the shower at about 3:30pm. At that time, I felt like the day is almost over, what is the point of putting on makeup and getting dressed? I made myself do it anyway. And I’m happy I did, because I felt pretty when my hubby came home from work and later was inspired to take my computer outside and work. *This is when I started writing this post! #progress

Day 3: This day I actually had to leave the house to grab lunch with a friend. Normally, when I have plans like this, I would get ready/dressed right before leaving the house, and most times, grab my makeup bag on my way out to do my makeup in the car. But because I got dressed and ready early in the morning, when it was time to leave the house, I just got my purse and went. And, I didn’t need to wish for a bunch of red lights for me to do my makeup. It was nice.

Day 4: My outfit today was scrubs. It’s nice to be able to wear almost PJ’s to work, but sometimes, I do wish my job required me to dress up because I enjoy putting pretty outfits together. Maybe its a good thing though, because I would probably go broke shopping for clothes. There would definitely be a ton of “But I need new clothes for work because I already wore this shirt 10 times” types of excuses coming from me.

Day 5: Final day of this challenge! At first, I forgot I had to get dressed and started looking for another gym outfit. Ha. (Yes, I would put on a fresh clean gym outfit after my post workout shower) and then remembered! Right, no gym clothes. I just went for a plain tee and jeans. Nothing fancy.

Takeaways from this challenge:

Overall, getting ready for the day, ie. putting on real clothes and doing my hair and makeup, DID help me be more productive. I felt like I had to be doing something. Like I wasn’t off work yet. My dream was to start a blog and then I started one, but because of my bad habits, I wasn’t making it a priority to sit down and work on it regularly. So this helped get my butt workin’.

And as a bonus, it made me feel good about myself all day. I didn’t have moments when I see myself in the mirror and freak out a little. (I do have such occurrences occasionally) lol.

I want to hear from you. Do you get dressed every day even when you don’t plan to leave the house? Or are you able to stay productive in comfy lounge clothes?

  1. I usually stay in my comfy sweats and a huge oversized sweater when I plan on staying home for the day but it is very hard to stay productive :/ Maybe I should try this!
